ANECS Follow-Up and Quality of Life Study

This extension to ANECS is being led by A/Prof Penny Webb, head of the Gynaecological Cancers Group at QIMR with a team of collaborators from around Australia.

The 2007 Senate report ‘Breaking the silence: a national voice for gynaecological cancers’ called for improved management of women with gynaecological cancer. For this to occur we need a clear understanding of the current patterns of care and outcomes for patients and to identify areas where changes could have the greatest positive effect. At the end of 2004, it was estimated that almost 20,000 women in the population had been diagnosed with endometrial cancer at some time but we know nothing about the long-term issues affecting this group of cancer survivors. The overall aim of this phase of the study is therefore to follow-up the almost 1500 women with endometrial cancer who took part in ANECS to document (i) treatment and follow-up practices and (ii) patient outcomes including both survival and quality of life and (iii) to evaluate how variation in patient management and lifestyle affect outcomes.
The study has two separate components.
  1. Collection of detailed information about how women were treated to assess how this varies across Australia and how differences in care affect patient outcomes
  2. We will also approach the women who took part in the study to find out from them if and/or how being diagnosed with endometrial cancer affected their quality of life
This study will help fill the current evidence gap and specifically it will contribute information in a number of key areas:
  • Baseline information regarding current management and the impact of variation on outcomes;
  • Identifying the health issues facing the 10,000+ endometrial cancer survivors in this country;
  • Improved prediction of prognosis to allow more targeted treatment;
  • Identification of potentially modifiable lifestyle factors associated with improved outcome;
Collection of detailed information about treatment and outcomes will also allow future molecular studies designed to identify new drug targets and better predictors of outcome.
